Tuaran hit by minor earthquake this morning

A weak earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale occurred about 16 km southeast of Tuaran, Sabah at 8.41 am today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department in a statement said the epicentre was at 6.1º north and 116.3º east, and tremors were reportedly felt near Ranau.

Last Friday, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake, the strongest yet in Malaysia, rocked Sabah at 7.15 am, triggering tremors in several places of the state and sending rocks and boulders crashing down Mount Kinabalu.

Eighteen people comprising four mountain guides and 14 climbers were killed in the incident.

Ten of them were from Singapore, six from Malaysia, one from Japan and one from China. — Bernama
