Fifth body recovered from Sarawak chopper crash

KUCHING - The fifth body from a helicopter crash in Sarawak that had a deputy minister and five others aboard has been recovered.

The male body, clad in torn dark blue trousers, was brought to the Lingga jetty at 6.47pm. Police divers spotted the body at 6pm in Tanjung Peleban, about 2.5km from the search and rescue base in Lingga.

There were bite marks on the body, which was found shirtless.

Three bodies have been identified so far: Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister Datuk Noriah Kasnon, her bodyguard Ahmad Sobri Harun and ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Surandran Annamalai.

Others on the aircraft included Noriah’s husband Asmuni Abdullah; Kuala Kangsar MP and Malaysian Palm Oil Board chairman Datuk Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad from Umno; as well as the pilot Captain Rudolf Rex Ragas, a Filipino.

The Eurocopter AS350 disappeared Thursday en route from Betong to Kuching during campaigning for today’s Sarawak state election.
