Two pump boat users among 49 arrested by Esscom

KOTA KINABALU - The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) has arrested two pump boat users in Sandakan during Ops Gasak 4.

This follows announcement over the ban on the use of pump boats made last month.

Esscom Special Forces chief of staff SAC Md Rusli Mat Junus said the two were among 49 people arrested during the operation at the Kg Bahagia water village on Sunday.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman had announced the ban on pump boats in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) starting Jan 7 next year.

But foreigners have been banned with immediate effect in view of the latest kidnapping involving four Sarawakians near Pulau Ligitan off Semporna on April 1.

Md Rusli said besides the two individuals, they have also detained 47 people for failing to produce valid travel and identification documents.

More than 200 people were inspected during the operation which started from 4am and ended at 10.45am.

It involved Esscom, the Immigration Department, National Registration Department, Sandakan Municipal Council, Army, Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), Royal Malaysian Customs and Excise Department, Road Transport Department and the Civil Defence Department.

“This operation is also conducted with SESB to curb illegal power connection activities in the area,” Md Rusli added.
