The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today confirmed that previously blocked websites such as Sarawak Report and Medium have been unblocked.
In a brief statement, the commission said there was no longer any reason to block sites as the report on 1MDB has been made public.
It added that the decision to block any website was based on the country’s laws.
“But the ban will be reviewed and if the criteria to block a website is invalid in view of the current times, the decision will also be rescinded,” it said.
Yesterday, it was reported that publishing platform Medium and whistleblower site Sarawak Report, which had been blocked by the Barisan Nasional government for over three years, could now be viewed without restriction.
MCMC blocked Medium in 2016 after its administrators failed to remove an article posted by Sarawak Report concerning ousted prime minister Najib Razak.
MCMC added that it had blocked Malaysiakini’s live.undi.info website, which published live updates of the 14th general election results, following complaints that it was publishing inaccurate information.
“However, after reviewing the contents, the criteria which were used to block the website were invalid,” the regulator said.
