GE13: PR candidates get ‘protection from hired gangsters’ from KL

KOTA KINABALU: Hired goons, most likely from peninsular Malaysia, are accompanying Sabah Pakatan Rakyat candidates on their campaign rounds.

These tough-looking outsiders, were very noticeable at the PR ceramah at the Foh Sang car park on Wednesday night, as they hung around a commotion between PR leaders and SAPP chief, Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

As a matter of fact, two of them even forcibly ensured that PKR Sabah leader, Dr Chong Eng Leong did not get up from his seat to go up to the stage.

A few others, Chinese and Indian youths, hovered around, presumably ready to attack the SAPP group that accompanied Yong.

The presence of a few armed policemen was probably what prevented the scene from turning ugly.

“This sort of (gangster) culture is alien to Sabah,” remarked a veteran opposition figure. “I don’t know what these present day leaders are up to.

“Sabah politicians will curse and swear and make up all kinds of stories at a ceramah, but they would never resort to violence. At the end of it all, politicians from both sides of the divide can laugh and drink coffee at the same table.”

But with the entry of Pakatan Rakyat and UMNO, so-called body guards seem to be the order of the day.

Later at the coffeeshops at Foh Sang, a group of these thugs were seen at the same place where SAPP had concluded their ceramah.

Although they remained at their own tables, their presence caused an unnecessary tension of sorts that was very noticeable.

Again, the presence of police personnel probably averted an unpleasant scenario.

Will we be seeing more of these unsavoury characters hanging round PR politicians as campaigning for the 13th general election enter its last legs.

Or will a spark cause them to beat up on hapless people.

Already, it has been noted that elderly voters are being approached by toughies asking them who they would vote for.

If their answer is PR, they would get a pat on the back. If the answer is BN, at the worse they get a gruff reply and a stern warning to tell them to vote PR.

But of that poor soul were to reply, “I’ll vote SAPP” abuse and hard stares would follow.

  2. PR & BN are the same. Sadly some Sabahans still think PR is good for them. They cannot see what PR will do to them once they are in power...Divide & Conquer the people of Sabah.

  4. Looks grim for Sabah's future if SAPP was defeated. A good party with strong leadership faced the wrath of voters for no reason.
