RANAU - "It is not about laws or superstition, but about having mutual respect among human beings," was Camilus Solungin's message to notorious Canadian nudist Emil Kaminski.
Camilus, 43, saw his youngest brother Joseph laid to rest today after the 33-year old perished in Malaysia's worst ever earthquake last Friday.
But beneath his sorrow, SMK Mat Salleh, Ranau teacher Camilus could not hide his disgust for Kaminski's mischief.
"As a Christian, I too do not believe in superstition, but I adhere to the advice and beliefs of the elders out of respect. It is part of being humans, we don't do things that will offend our fellow-human beings whether they are Muslims, Christians or Animists.
"This is something we are taught here, but I guess a person like Kaminski doesn't have this in him."
Kaminski has admitted on his social media accounts that he was one of the 10 foreigners posed in the nude on the summit of Mount Kinabalu, but has subsequently riled authorities and local people further with abusive and vulgar postings and comments that went viral yesterday.
His attack on local culture is centred on statements from local elders about the spirits of Mount Kinabalu being angered by the nudists, who also urinated at the summit in their May 30 escapade, exactly a week after which the magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck.
Kaminski, in brushing it off as superstition, has called on locals not to subject him or others to their cultural and religious beliefs, calling them "archaic and idiotic".
Police are on the look-out for Kaminski, who is believed to still be in Sabah based on his Facebook posting yesterday.
Camilus said even his mother was still an animist, who constantly reminds her children of respect various spirits.
