KUALA LUMPUR - Police arrested five men including an Indonesian believed to be involved in militant activities in Selangor and Johor since last Monday.

The men, aged between 22 and 40 were nabbed during the operation conducted by the federal police Special Branch's Counter-Terrorism Division between last Monday and Friday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said three of the men were believed to be connected to Islamic State militant group while two others were connected to a terror group called "Imam Mahdi".

"The 22-year-old man nabbed in Johor worked as a canteen operator attached to the Health Ministry's pharmacy in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Investigation revealed he had planned to leave for Syria to join the IS group," he said.

Another suspect, an Indonesian man, also worked at the same canteen.

Khalid said checks revealed both of them had been arrested in Johor for immigration related offences.

In Selangor, police nabbed two Malaysians aged 28 and 30 believed to be the members of "Imam Mahdi" group who had planned to initiate attacks in several places in Klang Valley.

Police, said Khalid, were tracking down remaining members of the group.

The fifth suspects detained was a 40-year-old man who was a senior officer at a Malaysian-based global agricultural and agri-commodities company.

Checks revealed the man had quit his job in August and left for Turkey on Oct 21 to join the IS.
