Car arson attack by jealous ex-husband remanded

The suspect involved in starting a fire that razed six cars near the Taman Jaya LRT station yesterday was ordered to be remanded four days by the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court today.

The order was granted by Deputy Registrar Mazra Mohamed this morning under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which deals with mischief with fire or an explosive substance.

Police sources said yesterday initial investigations revealed that a jealous ex-husband may be involved in the incident, believed to have started with the throwing of a Molotov cocktail.

Selangor district police chief Zani Hamzah confirmed last night that the suspect, in his early 20s, was arrested about 11pm in Petaling Jaya.

The accused is represented by lawyer Suraj Singh.

The incident at around 1pm had sparked rumours of a bomb explosion but this was doused by Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar through a tweet.

While it is believed the suspect had targeted one particular car, the fire had spread and engulfed five others that were parked nearby.

Out of the six cars razed, three were still at the open car park opposite the Taman Jaya LRT station.

In a related development, a team from the Fire and Rescue Services Department were sent to the the site this morning.

Department investigation director Mohd Razam Taja Rahim told Malaysiakini that his team were in the process of identifying witnesses to assist in police investigations.

"We will try to finish our report as soon as possible," he said, adding that strong winds and easily flammable materials had caused the fire to spread rapidly.

He also urged the public to stop spreading rumours on the cause of the fire as it could hinder ongoing investigations - Msiakini
