4 Abu Sayyaf terrorists killed in clash with MNLF in Sulu

Four suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorists were killed following a clash with Moro National Liberation Front fighters in Sulu on Tuesday, a military statement said.

The Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command said the encounter was "an offshoot of the ongoing efforts of the MNLF to help facilitate the release of Indonesian kidnap victims " believed to be under captivity by the terrorist group.

Aside from killing four Abu Sayyaf men, the MNLF also recovered several high-powered firearms during the 7 a.m. clash in Barangay Tanjung, Kalinggalang Caluang.

The military statement identified one of the slain Abu Sayyaf personalities as Jennor Lahab alias Kumander Jim Dragon. Another fatality was believed to be Dragon's son.

The bodies of the slain Abu Sayyaf men were brought to Barangay Masjid Punjungan and were expected to be turned over to the local government unit for proper disposition.

Wesmincom spokesman Maj. Felimon Tan said Lahab is a known follower of Abu Sayyaf subleader Alhabsy Misaya.

Based on government information, Lahab was involved in the kidnapping of 10 Indonesians in March 2016 and in encounter with the group of former Kalinggalang Caluang Mayor Jerry Misuari last April 15, 2015.

Tan said they learned of the clash through intelligence reports and did not deploy troops to the area to prevent any misencounter with the MNLF.

“We do not insert troops during such situation. As long as the community is safe, we are okay with that,” he said. — RSJ, GMA News
