BN Manifesto on MA63 just a farce

KOTA KINABALU - The Barisan Nasional’s manifesto for Sabah is nothing more than a farce, former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee said.

The Sabah Progressive Party president said this was most obvious in the ruling coalition’s pledge on fulfilling the state’s rights as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the nation’s founding document.

“The fact that Barisan uses the phrase ‘secara konsensus’ or by consensus to implement MA63 is nothing more than trickery,” Yong said on Sunday.

“Going by that phrase, for as long as the Federal government does not agree, then there is simply no consensus,” he said.

Yong said the word consensus thus was nothing more than a veto that “Malaya” leaders could use if they did not like how MA63 is implemented.

"Why can't the Barisan, which is the government at both federal and state levels, simply implement MA63 without resorting to trickery,” he added.

To me, this is another proof once again that the Barisan Nasional has no intention of fulfilling its promises in regards to MA63,” Yong said.

Yong, a lawyer by profession, said MA63 was in itself a document based on real consensus signed on July 9, 1963 by the United Kingdom, Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo) and Singapore.
