Is the Sabah Barisan Nasional government so blind that it cannot see that people are living in darkness and collecting rainwater to drink and cook?
Questioning the logic behind the government’s decision to build a new complex, activist lawyer Kong Hong Ming said: “This money should be used to improve infrastructure and provide badly needed amenities to the people, especially those who are living in the rural areas.
“Why is the Sabah Barisan Nasional government spending taxpayers’ money on grandiose projects and not providing basic infrastructure such as piped-water supply to villagers?”
Kong said thousands of villagers in the state still do not have access to clean water.
Citing the case of Paitan in Beluran district, Kong, who is a Sabah PKR official, said here more than 12 villages were depending on rainwater for their daily water supply.
“And Paitan is only four hours from Kota Kinabalu. People in Paitan have suffered long enough.
“They badly need clean water and power supply which will require only a small fraction of the contract sum awarded for the recently announced Sabah administration centre costing some RM388 million to build,” he said.
Kong, who was in Kampung Simpang in Paitan recently, said he was shocked to hear complaints from villages who had voted the BN in every general election.
He said it was an outrage that the BN-led government had failed in its duty to provide clean water and electricity to these villagers who are living in poverty-stricken conditions.
Catching rainwater
According to Kong, all the basic facilities in Sabah were in “bad shape or completely lacking”.
“How is it possible that after 48 years of nation-building there are still large groups of people in Sabah who are still without any clean water and electricity supply although the villages are residing at places which are only 20 to 30 minutes by road away from the present Paitan mini-secretariat.
“The roads are almost unserviceable at times during rainy days and one bridge is on the verge of collapse.
“The river is so polluted because of the plantation and logging activities upstream.
“But the people in Paitan have no choice but to use the brownish water taken from the river for domestic purposes.
“Villagers told me that for drinking purpose they rely solely on rain water and the clean water pool at the culvert outflow.
“That (the outflow) has been reserved by the villagers for domestic use such as cooking and drinking water, especially when rainwater collected runs out,” he said.
Encroaching on NCR land
On land issues, Kong, who was in Kampung Simpang to talk on native customary rights (NCR) over land, said the already poor people in Paitan had now also fallen prey to logging and plantation companies encroaching into their ancestral land.
He said logging was rampant in the area and clear felling was being practised by timber companies without checks by the authorities.
He wants the state and federal governments to immediately look into the plight of the villagers and stop alienating massive acreages of land to individuals, which will only drive the people deeper into poverty.
“As for me, I had only a glimpse of their life as a visitor which humbled me.
“But the poor people in Paitan have no choice but to live their life there everyday – from the day they were born to the day they die.
“The development carried out by the BN government using public fund such as the extravagant state administrative centre costing taxpayers some RM388 million meant nothing at all to the people,” Kong said.
This has shown the totally contradicting with BN gimmick slogan Rakyat Didahulukan!!! It should be project didahulukan, rakyat? pelan2 tunggu lah.
ReplyDeleteMusang bin tidak aman, I doubt you have any idea on how to improve the standard of living for the poor Sabahans.
Shame on you!
ReplyDeleteDont flame me ya, but i think the state government is taking the right decision to build the administration center now.
ReplyDeletecurrently, the state government didnt have a centralized administration center & the state ministry office are located on a different part of Kota Kinabalu.
The decision to build the administration center will allow all the ministry to be located in one place, which is convenient for any person who have any matters to sort out with different state ministry.
People will not going to have to go here & there around KK just to settle a simple matter. They only have to go to one place & settle it there...
ReplyDeleteIt consumes time when I have to go here and there just to settle a simple matter. And if the new administrative centre is to be built for the convenience of public, then I shall agree with it. But regarding the cost RM388 million, I hope they calculate the cost wisely and not for personal interests.
ReplyDeleteApart from that, the location of this new administration center is also suitable since the Sabah Foundation building, State assembly, mini putrajaya and ums located near the area....so its more or less like the administration hub for both state & federal government...how convenience is that?
ReplyDeleteSabah being the POOREST in Malaysia but our Stupid Dumb Dumb and incompetence CM want to build a new admin building?
ReplyDeleteI doubt he knew what is priority beside busy in filling up his coffer in his graveyard.
So much for your centralized administration and shame on you that you blinded by this proposed project while other people down there in the forest need a better road access. shame on you that you thought this proposed project will really benefit for you directly. and shame on you that you are blindfolded by these "idiotic baboon state cabinet EXCO" in the name of more effective administration. The glorified Mini Putrajaya is more than enough to combine the government top clown with their vassal. what the need of another gov building. RM388M is big sum of taxpayers money. and this is only for the construction work of the said building. other expenditure will be coming soon such as water, electric, repair & maintenance, renovation, cleaning services and bla..bla.. blaa.. don't tell us that the annual budget to cover all this thing will only cost less than rm10k. how about postponement of the project just like other federal/state government project. i.e the tanjung aru flyover, renovation of the newly bought SMC building, construction work on old HQE etc. The mini Putrajaya for instant, how much the federal gov expend to cover the repair work on the wall jubin that cracked and fell to the ground after the warranty period is over? why dont they just use the budget allocated for this proposed project to be vire on the critical road throughout Sabah.?
ReplyDeleteThere is always a good reason on why the government would want to do something. In this case, building the administration centre is for the people's convenience .
ReplyDeleteHowever, i think its better for the government to listen to what the people has to say about this. Rm338m for offices, im sure many will oppose it.
ReplyDeleteMereka ingat Musa kasi masuk orang awam kalau bina pejabat kerajaan baru?
ReplyDeleteThink about it. All the state ministry will going to be put in a same buildings, which means people will not going to have to remember the address of every states ministry exist in Sabah.
ReplyDeleteIf the opposition manage to beat BN in the next GE, they can use the new building as an administration center also. so no waste of fund here. Benefit goes out to all people.
@isay,
ReplyDeleteDon't be dumb.We are talking about the life of the unfortunate in Sabah that should be given priority not the luxury of the ministers and politicians.
Whats the point of having beatiful buildings and skyscrapers if going beyond 30 kilometers from the buildings the people still live in shacks and chicken huts.
Moscow for example has huge government buildings but 5 minutes drive into the countryside you can see people washing their clothes by the river sides.
I am not against development but the CM should plan development that directly benefits the people as a whole not the elite few.Mind you Sabah is still the poorest state in malaysia.
The money should be used to build affordable houses for the people and improving their standard of living. It should be used to help bumiputras in the field of commerce and trade.
As I see it the BN government in Sabah is clueless as to their priorities. They seem to do something but there are no finishing touch at all.Its all so many plannings but when come to enforcements they all blundered.Worst the CM couldn't care as he is busy with acquiring wealth and looking after his own political survival. This CM is all about styles and nothing more.I would grade him as a 'G' CM.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous July 26, 2011 11:48 PM
ReplyDeleteIf im not mistaken, different allocation has been set aside to address each of the problems stated by the author or the commentator here.
We need the administration center as a administration hub. I think this project, in the long run, will benefit the rakyat and the state government it self, in term of cost effectiveness.
Govt should give the reason why need this new office? If it more important than the people right is okay. But if not really, maybe people have reason to protest this decision.
Kamu tunggu saja ketulahan suatu hari nanti.
They need a better office.Common sense.
ReplyDeleteThe people need better lives. Its common sense too.
ReplyDeleteIni cm cari untung punya. Maybe the new office site to be proposed on his title land with very2 lucrative compensation. The other option is that the contract should be awarded to his cronies. So many unoccupied govt buildings around kk. Why not utilized it musa ta aman.
Mau tau banyak lagi? Tunggu lah!
Anon July 27, 2011 8:23 PM
ReplyDeleteI thought it was already announce that Bina Puri was the company that secure the project?
There was even a press release over the matter?
no comments on your rambling about Musa...Many accusation has been thrown at him lately, but not one dare to come forward & show the proof, if there is any?
So?We are talking about state administration building, not some other commercial buildings.
ReplyDeleteIsay, how about the wisma khidmat? sia tingu itu building pagi petang waktu turun dan balik kerja. kosong. tidak terurus. saya pasti banyak lagi bangunan milik/separuh milik kerajaan tidak berpenghuni, tidak diselia serta dibiarkan begitu sahaja tanpa membawakan pulangan kepada rakyat. how about sedco buildings seluruh Sabah. semuanya pun hanya sekitar 40-50 percent kena sewa. tidakkah ada alternative lain selain "push" utk bena sebuah bangunan berharga 388 juta. ini terlalu banyak. i mean, common la... why 388 million? plus minus dgn peruntukkan operasi dan pembaikpulihan, pembersihan, renovation, perolehan perabot, perkakasan elektrik, sewa elektrik, sewa air, sewa internet and the hidden cost is much more, i believe so from what i see.
ReplyDeletePreviously the state government wanted to use Wisma Khidmat as hospital but the public does not want. Say the building is not safe, whatever. If not safe, what else can the building be used for?
ReplyDeleteNext step is to demolish Wisma Khidmat and build a hotel like Hotel Horizon situated in front of DBKK.Believe me this is what the BN government is going to do.I bet all the CM cronies are already on stand-by mode.
ReplyDeleteBina Puri is the main contractor for the Admistrative Centre but do you know who the sub-contractors are?
Anon July 28, 2011 12:49 PM
ReplyDeleteI thought Wisma Khidmat has been given to UMS to become a medical school?
The idea to convert Wisma Khidmat to Hospital was scrapped because the ministry of health decline the offer made by the state government to convert the building into a hospital..
I dont know whose the sub-con will be, & i bet no one will know...because as a main contractor, i believe that Bina Puri has the power the appoint their own sub-con...
but all of us are free to speculate...
Hidup demokrasi!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous July 28, 2011 8:18 PM
ReplyDeleteKeterlaluan mcm mana pula?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous July 29, 2011 2:09 PM
ReplyDeletekamu sokong parti mana?
People problem should come first.
ReplyDeleteIa tetap akan didirikan.
ReplyDeleteSo whatever it is, it won't change anything.
ReplyDelete“This money should be used to improve infrastructure and provide badly needed amenities to the people, especially those who are living in the rural areas..."
ReplyDeleteYes, it's good to have a centralized administration centre for convenience only when the rakyat's needs have been taken care off first
ReplyDeletethere are pros and cons..
ReplyDeletewhatever it is, the voters have the final say in PRU-13
ReplyDeletePenjelasan KM amat dialu-alukan...
ReplyDeleteGovernment should put more effort on improving the public facilities for rakyat comfort.
ReplyDelete
