Hari Raya Visit and Courtesy call on Dr. Tan Bee Hwai
KOTA KINABALU - The society of HOPE Kota Kinabalu visited the Likas Women and Children Hospital today (15th August 2012) led by its President Christina Liew accompanied by its director Roman Lo and members.
The children patients received Raya green packets (duit raya) in view of the coming Hari Raya by Society. There were about 100 patients (children) that received the Raya Green packets during today’s visit.
The Society also presented to the Doctors and Nurses of the Children’s ward with a raya cake as their appreciation for the hard work and dedicated services rendered to the patients.
“We celebrate the joy of Hari Raya with our Muslim brothers and sister and their families. Festivals are times for reunion and happiness with the families. We wish these patients speedy recovery and can go home soon.” said Christina Liew, president of the Society of Hope Kota Kinabalu.
The Society of Hope has been consistently visiting the children patients in the Likas Women and Children Hospital for every major festival season such as Hari Raya, Christmas and Chinese New Year for the past 5 years to bring gifts for the in patients.
Later during a courtesy call on Dr. Tan Bee Hwai – Director of the Likas Women and Children Hospital, Christina Liew discussed with Dr. Tan about the recent out-break of the hand foot mouth disease in Sabah (HFM).
“We received calls from concerned parents regarding the HFM in respect of an early detection of the disease and on prevention. How to detect the signs of HFM early and what kind of methods of prevention?” asked Christina.
Dr. Tan Bee Hwai- the Director of the Likas Women and Children Hospital explained that HFM is a member of the enterovirus family known as coxsackie virus A16. A viral disease that attacks the skin and is contagious which means it can be transmitted from person to person.
Personal hygiene is most important especially with children under 10 years old and or their care takers as the infection is common among children 1o years and below. However there are cases adolescent suffers from the same infection too though rearly.
The symptoms of HFM consists of fever, headache, loss of appetite, rash with very small blisters on hands, mouth and tongue, sore throat and ulcers in the throat (including tonsils), mouth and tongue.
A child who suffers from the infection should stay home (in isolation) and avoid contact people. Always wash your hands if you have been in contact with a person who suffers from the infection”, advised Dr. Tan Bee Hwai.
