MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has called on members and followers of a Muslim royal clan who occupied a village in the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah, saying it is their ancestral homeland, to surrender to avoid further bloodshed.
Aquino said Saturday in a message to the group led by a brother of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III of the southern Philippine province of Sulu that they should "surrender now without conditions."
Twelve Filipinos and two Malaysian police commandos died in a clash Friday between Malaysian police commandos and about 200 members of the clan led by Agbimuddin Kiram.
There was no immediate comment from the Kiram family.
A Kiram spokesman says the Sultan's brother was not hurt in the clash. The Kiram group entered the Malaysian village three weeks ago.

DeletePrime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Malaysian intelligence agency and its Philippine's counterpart were investigating into a claim that the armed Sulu intruders were instigated by political elements.
ReplyDeleteHe said it was also unusual that the intrusion was timed so close to Malaysia's general election, due to be carried out soon.
ReplyDelete"We want to know more on the claim. Philippine president Aquino is also interested to know." "We are carrying out investigations separately but would coordinate on our findings," he told reporters
ReplyDeleteNajib was asked on a claim reported by Phillipine media that the armed intrusion, which has claimed 17 llves, including five Malaysian policemen, was politically motivated.
ReplyDeleteNajib strongly condemned the statement by PKR vice-president Tian Chua accusing Umno of having orchestrated the gun battle with armed intruders in Lahad Datu, Sabah.
ReplyDeleteHe said the allegation was a despicable political game by the opposition to garner the people's support in view of the approaching general election.
ReplyDelete"They (the opposition) are accusing the government of staging a drama. It is a great lie and falsehood. Even in the Memali incident, the opposition put the blame on the government. "We (the government) did not do any such thing. We never politicise our security because it involves human lives," he said

ReplyDeleteNajib also said that the time had come for Malaysians to determine a government which could safeguard their interests and promise a better future.
