13-year-old victim in rape trial testifies via camera

KOTA KINABALU: The 13-year-old victim in the rape trial of 40-year-old restaurant manager Riduan Masmud testified in camera Thursday.

Sessions court judge Ummu Kalthom Samad ordered the public to leave the courtroom for the teenage witness to testify via a camera placed in a separate room, on the fourth day of the trial of Riduan who is accused of raping the 13-year-old schoolgirl on Feb 18 this year.

Before the witness testified, deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul told the court that the witness did not want to see the face of the accused as she was scared.

The camera was then rearranged in a way that she did not have to look at the accused as the judge made the order for the public to clear the courtroom under Section 5 of the Evidence of Child Witness Act 2007.

The case sparked national attention after Riduan took the 13-year-old girl, who had accused him of raping her in a parked vehicle, as his second wife under the Syariah law, on May 7.
