SIBU: There is a need to correct the misconception that Sarawak “joined” Malaysia, said Sarawak’s Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
“We have to put a historical fact correct for we helped form and became part of Malaysia. We did not join Malaysia. There was no Malaysia before that.
“We helped form Malaysia, and Sept 16, in a way, is our national day,” the Borneo Post quoted him as saying to reporters after opening the Malaysia Day 50th anniversary exhibition at Sibu Heritage Centre.
Wong said, in fact, the state had been independent for nearly two months before the formation of Malaysia.
The Union Jack, he pointed out, was lowered and the Sarawak flag flown for the first time on July 22, 1963.
“In fact, Sarawak became independent from July 22 to Sept 16, before Malaysia came into being. Probably a lot of people do not know this part of history.”
He added that the Sarawak government was first formed on July 22, 1963 under the leadership of Tan Sri Kalong Ningkan.
“So, 50 years later, when we celebrate the 50th anniversary, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud also held a cabinet meeting on July 22 just to commemorate the 50th anniversary, following the footsteps of the cabinet 50 years ago,” he said, adding that a similar photograph was taken.
