Another desperate act by Liew’s faction – Teo

KOTA KINABALU - The publication of a notice in all major local newspapers yesterday, October 3, by Chin Yen Sang as the executive secretary of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has been described as another act of desperation by Datuk Liew Vui Keong’s fraction.

LDP secretary general Datuk Teo Chee Kang said the notice further reinforced the fact that Liew was scared of facing the party delegates because he had lost the grassroots’ support to helm the party.

“The raising of insignificant technical issues, lodgement of police report over alleged forgery and publication of the said public notice are so predictable,” Teo said in a press statement yesterday.

He said that in view of the nature and effect of the resolutions sought to be passed in the special meeting of the party conference (“EGM”), one cannot expect Liew’s fraction to support and give cognizance to the same.

“According to the party constitution, so long as more than one third of the delegates request in writing, there is no need to get sanction from the president or any other office bearers before an EGM can be convened,” he pointed out.

Teo, who is also Minister of Special Tasks, said it was not surprising at all that such public notice was published because they (Liew’s faction) could not get a competent authority to stop the conduct of the EGM.

“I understand that Liew’s fraction has complained to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) office but failed to get a ruling to stop the EGM, neither have they obtained an injunction from the court for such purpose.

“Regrettably, the party executive secretary, who is supposed to stay neutral, allowed himself to be used by a rejected leader who refuses to face political reality.”

According to clause 1 of the party by-laws, the secretary-general shall be responsible for the proper administration, management and control of the party headquarters.

Clause 2 provides that the secretary-general shall be deemed to be the party’s public officer.

“Based on the latest record of the ROS which we extracted on October 1, my name still appears as the secretary-general despite the fact that Liew’s fraction had informed ROS on the purported new appointment,” Teo said.

In view of the above, he said the party headquarters should report to him as the secretary-general.

“I caused the notice for EGM to be published on September 26, 2013. In the present circumstances, I do not see any reason why the said notice can be invalid,” Teo said.

He believed that all the party delegates are mature, hence will not be disturbed at all by the public notice published yesterday.

“The expected huge turnout of delegates in the EGM at Kian Kok Middle School, Kota Kinabalu on 6 October, will show that the destiny of the party lies in the hands of the grassroots as opposed to one man, and our delegates will ensure that their voices are heard,” he stressed.

“Once decisions are made by the delegates in the EGM as the supreme authority of the party, uncertainties will be made certain, murkiness will turn into clarity.

“I urge delegates from all divisions to attend the EGM, regardless of whether your division has made a stance to support either fraction,” Teo said.

Delegates are reminded to wear the party’s black and white uniform and bring along their identity cards for identification purposes. Registration of delegates will commence at 10am.

Meanwhile, on the recent statement by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyididin Yassin, Teo said he welcomed the initiatives by Barisan Nasional’s central leadership to play a role to work on a possible solution to resolve the leadership tussle in LDP.
