GE13: DAP Sabah leaders' contradicting each other on Edward's departure
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah DAP Deputy Chairman Fred Fung said the departure of its Vice Chairman Edward Ewol Mujie to Upko is no big loss to the party, contrary to the view of incumbent MP Hiew King Chieu.
"Ditching the party as the election is around the corner tells the whole story.
Maybe he was disappointed that he won't be a candidate in the coming election."
Fung said Mujie's reason for joining Upko because of the effort to unite the KDMs through 'Gelombang Tataba' initiated by PBS, Upko and PBRS was a poor one.
"Anyway, good luck to him and we wish him all the best and see how far he can assist in the unity mission," said Fung.
He said Sabah DAP was not shaken by the departure of the few as the majority are with the party and believe in its direction.
"Our support in the State, including rural areas, has gone from strength to strength and we are facing the coming election with confidence.
"Mujie praised his new party for being sincere in its fight for the rights of Sabahans and has been very vocal on all issues affecting the rakyat such as illegal immigrants.
"I don't see any logic in such statement as Mujie should know very well that DAP has all along being consistent and very determined in raising issues concerning the people," said Fung.
He said joining politics is not all about uniting one race.
"Unity is important for any country but the problems facing our country like corruption and nepotism, among others, and high costs of living in Sabah too need attention and solutions.
"The people have suffered for too long and we need to have long-term solutions so that the country will prosper and the people as well as the generations to come will have a better life. This is the time to Ubah (change)," said Fung.
Meanwhile, Fung, said he will let the party leadership announce the list of candidates for Sabah.
"DAP leadership will announce it at the appropriate time," he said, neither denying or confirming that he will stand in the Luyang state seat where he contested in the last election in 2008.
In the 2008 election, SAPP's Melanie Chia, who was standing under the BN ticket, obtained 5,073 votes, while Fung obtained 3,571 votes while PKR's Alexander Wong obtained 2,794 votes. Melanie won with a majority of 1,502 votes.
Fung said he is confident DAP will wrest the seat this time.
