‘Huguan Siou’ Anwar: It’s a mockery, says Jeffrey

STAR chief Jeffrey Kitingan claims that those who conferred the title on Anwar Ibrahim were prepared to sell out their culture for personal gains.

PETALING JAYA: The awarding of the “Huguan Siou” title to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim makes a mockery of the customs of the KadazanDusunMurut (KDM) community, says State Reform Party (STAR) chairman Jeffrey Kitingan.

“It is a mockery to the customs and institutions of the KDM community,” said Jeffrey, who is also United Borneo Front chairman, when contacted.

He was commenting on newsreports of Anwar being bestowed the Huguan Siou title when he visited Kampung Paginatan, Sabah, on Sunday.

The title was “given” to him by the PKR Ranau division in Paginatan.

The photographs of Anwar wearing the headgear and sash of the Huguan Siou were posted on the Facebook account of Ranau PKR chief Jonathan Yasin.

Huguan Siou is an institutionalised revered title equivalent to a paramount leader of the KDM community. It is bestowed by the Kadazan Dusun Culture Association’s Council of Elders.

The current Huguan Siou is Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan.

Jeffrey also said certain people in Sabah PKR hoped to extend their political shelf life by bestowing the title on Anwar.

“These leaders are prepared to sell out their culture for their own selfish motive. They did it [giving the title to Anwar] because they wanted to woo their boss [Anwar] in an attempt to be a candidate.

“These people continue to practise things that are disrespectful to the KadazanDusunMurut community,” said Jeffrey, who is also Pairin’s younger brother.

Grave mistake

Meanwhile, Kota Belud MP, Abdul Rahman, when contacted, said Sabah PKR made a grave mistake to bestow the honour on Anwar since he does not deserve the title.

“How can one give the title to someone who does not deserve it? It is a sacred title… You can’t come in a helicopter to attend a political ceramah and get the title,” said Rahman, referring to Anwar’s political campaign in Sabah.

He also took a dig at Anwar, saying that the opposition leader is not satisfied with just one title.

“He is already ‘gift of God’ to Malaysians but it is not enough for him. He wants to be the King of Malaysia,” claimed Rahman.

(PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had described Anwar as God’s gift to Malaysians during the PKR national congress in 2010.)

Anwar, however, denied that he was bestowed the honour.

“It’s not true. I am not aware of it. There was never a public announcement about it,” Anwar was quoted as saying the The Star today.

  1. In the Kadazan language, a 'hugu' means a landmark or a milestone. It is something noticeable. A huguan is also a noun that means a leader. Much like a hugu to be seen, commonly a huguan is known to his followers. Someone prominent.

'Osiou' means brave. Tosiou is the superlative of osiou.

Is Huguan Siou the short form of Huguan Tosiou? The bravest leader? How was the title derived?

When I say, "Siou", "Siou no diau kio" or "Siou kumaa diau", I mean sorry, excuse me or my apologies.

    Pardon me. Aren't we cool?

Is the title well deserved yet?

  2. This will probably rile up the Kadazan to vote against PKR. In their over zealousness to condescend they have broken the tribal convention, only the Kadazan peoples can appoint their HOGUAN SIOU.

The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) has demanded apologies from the Ranau PKR division and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over the conferment of the "Huguan Siou" title to the PKR adviser.

Its secretary-general Suman Yasambun said the Huguan Siou or paramount chief title was exclusively reserved for a Kadazandusun Murut leader, and culturally inappropriate and illegal to be bestowed on a non-Kadazandusun Murut.

"It has insulted and hurt the feelings of the Kadazandusun community. In fact, it is an act that will bring the curse upon a person or persons who usurp the leadership structure within the Kadazandusun community, especially in relation to the institution of Huguan Siou," he said in a statement Wednesday.

Anwar drew flak when he accepted the title bestowed on him by Ranau PKR head Jonathan Yasin on Sunday.

Suman said "Huguan Siou" was an institution that embodied the community's spirit of unity, courage and self-determination.

"He is the guardian of the Kadazandusun Murut customs, norms, artefacts and traditions which were celebrated every year through the Kaamatan festival," he said.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the title was sacred to the Kadazadusun Murut community and should only bestowed on those from the community.

He said the person who bestowed the title was probably trying to gain political mileage and it was unbecoming of Anwar to accept it for he had been in politics and government for years.

Masidi said any action deemed to belittle the Huguan Siou institution would undermine Sabah's cultural heritage and that political agenda should not override the interests of Sabahans.

United Sabah Bajau Organisation president Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said the "Huguan Siou" saga showed that Anwar was ignorant of the cultures of the various ethnic groups in Sabah in his quest for power.

"He has insulted Sabahans. How do we expect Sabahans to trust him?" he said.

  24. Uproar over Anwar getting 'Huguan Siou' title

A STUNT by the opposition to woo Kadazandusun support in Sabah by declaring Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the community's paramount leader has backfired.
Reports about the de facto leader given the title "Huguan Siou" by the PKR Ranau division in Paginatan on Sunday had surfaced in the Internet and was swiftly met with a host of criticism in the last 48 hours.
Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan is the "Huguan Siou", a title bestowed by the Kadazandusun community for life.
United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, when met here yesterday, refused to be drawn into such an issue, saying "I do not want to comment on a joke".
"That is all I want to say about this," he said with a grin during a gathering of the Madani Balanting Clan in Kampung Putaton here.
Sepanggar member of parliament Datuk Eric Majimbun, who is also a life member of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association, said Anwar should not have accepted the title in the first place.
"He has shown total disrespect to our community and to me this is a mockery," said Majimbun, who is also the opposition Sabah Progressive Party deputy president.
Sabah State Reform Party president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who echoed a similar sentiment, said the whole episode was an act of desperation of people lobbying for seats and support.
"How can they belittle this issue blatantly for the sake of winning political mileage? It's a disgrace," he said, adding that community-related matters should not be mixed or confused with politics.
Upko secretary-general Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau described the events that took place in Ranau as hilarious.
"When you bestow the title on someone who is not from the community, I would say that it is a misplaced award," the former Tuaran member of parliament said, adding that the title was only meant for the Kadazandusun community.
Upko information chief Datuk Donald Mojuntin said to bestow the title on someone from a different community was illogical.
"As far as I am concerned, 'Huguan Siou' is a Kadazan concept. To bestow it on a non-Kadazan is somehow confusing the people and it can be an insult to the Kadazan community. It also rips at the fabric of unity that Sabahans are well known for.

It then involves rituals which among others request for established “bobolians” or priestess to lead in slaughter of animals, special prayers and leading the tribal chief to several more rituals including walking on top of several traditional gongs to symbolise his immense power over his brethren.

  55. Anwar, however, denied that he was bestowed the honour.

“It’s not true. I am not aware of it. There was never a public announcement about it,” Anwar was quoted as saying the The Star today.

  56. A stunt by the opposition to woo Kadazandusun support in Sabah by declaring Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the community's paramount leader has backfired.

  57. United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, when met here yesterday, refused to be drawn into such an issue, saying "I do not want to comment on a joke".

    ReplyDelete

"How can there be a 'Huguan Siou' Malaysia? That would mean he is a paramount leader for the country and it is illogical," he said, adding that culture and tradition should never be used for political mileage.

  62. Parti Bersatu Sabah vice-president Datuk Herbert Timbun Lagadan said it was a "lunatic act of desperation" on the part of PKR leaders in Sabah.

"Or is it a preview of an action to be taken by Kadazandusun leaders in a Pakatan Rakyat government who are willing to give away Sabahan rights to Anwar?

"Are there any valid reasons for him to qualify to get the 'Huguan Siou' title except being the 'Huguan Siou' of the PTI (illegal immigrants) in Sabah?"

  71. Sementara itu, Presiden Pertubuhan Bajau Bersatu Sabah (USBO) Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak berkata saga Huguan Siou menunjukkan Anwar jahil tentang budaya pelbagai kumpulan etnik di Sabah.

    ReplyDelete

  88. DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim's great obsession with Sabah or Sarawak is, understandably, pellucid. The de facto leader of the floundering opposition coalition has been courting the small political parties there and some disgruntled politicians to try to win over the two politically key states.

    ReplyDelete
  89. But his latest foray into Sabah over the long Chinese New Year break seems to have backfired on him, raising a big question mark over Pakatan Rakyat's electoral chances, especially in the Land Below the Wind. Sabah itself is very much in the news lately -- from the unauthorised landing in Lahad Datu to the unexplained deaths of pygmy elephants.

    ReplyDelete
  90. But Anwar's folly seems to have sparked the wrath of ordinary Kadazandusun in the state. His acceptance of the conferment as the Kadazandusun's "Huguan Siou", or paramount leader, title has caused a huge uproar, with the people calling it a "total disrespect" to the community. It is a major political blunder as there can only be one "Huguan Siou". The actual paramount leader is Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who has held the title since 1984.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Anwar apparently received the title from the Parti Keadilan Rakyat Ranau division. Photographs of him wearing a sash featuring the words "Huguan Siou" have been posted in mainstream newspapers and on the Facebook pages of various people, including that of PKR's Ranau division head Jonathan Yasin. Jonathan, a Kadazandusun lawyer, is apparently the brother-in law of Sabah PKR leader Ansari Abdullah.

  92. Anwar and Pakatan are banking on Sabah as a dream "passport" to Putrajaya, if they ever win power. He had been busy trying to engineer defections of Barisan Nasional lawmakers to the opposition pact and dangling a 20 per cent oil royalty carrot to the people in the two states.

    ReplyDelete
  93. He is also courting minor parties into the Pakatan fold. But parties such as Sabah Progressive Party and Sabah State Reform Party (STAR) know very well that Anwar is desperate for their support and are playing hardball, demanding that he accede to their varied demands first before committing anything.

    ReplyDelete
  94. STAR leader Jeffrey Kitingan had even slammed Anwar for hinting that Putrajaya and peninsula-based political parties determine autonomy for Sabah and Sarawak. Anwar's credibility will depend on how many of Sabah and Sarawak parliamentary seats he can deliver to the Pakatan bloc.

  95. Already, his reputation among Sabahan politicians is at stake following the formation of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the long-standing illegal immigrants issue. He has wavered in his position regarding the issue.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Pulling the rug from under the opposition, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak made a bold decision to set up the RCI in a clear sign that the Federal Government is sincere in wanting the thorny issue resolved once and for all.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Perhaps Sabahans should recall events after the landmark 1994 state election which was won narrowly by Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) to reflect on how Anwar has changed his tune on the issue now that he is in the opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  98. One would recall how Anwar, as the then deputy prime minister and the BN director of the 1994 state election, vehemently opposed the suggestion by PBS president Tan Sri Pairin to the formation of the RCI.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Unlike Anwar, Pairin has never wavered in his fight for a solution to the illegal immigrants issue, from the time he was in the opposition and now as a key member of the ruling coalition.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Already, Anwar has earned the reputation of the "boy who cried wolf", for claiming that Sabah and other MPs were ready to jump the BN ship on that suspicious Sept 16, 2008 coup that never materialised.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Still, the latest boo-boo over the Huguan Siou will leave a lasting mark on the Kadazandusun voters. As one angry Sabahan remarked: "It's the highest honour for a leader in the Kadazandusun community and it should never be played around with. "It's a complete insult to the community."
