The foreigners, aged between 27 and 40, were detained in a four-hour blitz, which started at 9pm.
A Filipino man, who was married to a Sabahan was detained with a fake IC, which he claimed he borrowed from one of his wife’s family members.
Two others were allegedly using the fake ICs to get jobs in the country including Safwan Arasil, 19, from Mindanao, who came to Tawau, Sabah on a boat in 2011 to look for work.
He claimed that a man approached him while in Tawau and offered him a MyKad fo RM200.
“The man told me that with the IC, I will be able to find a job that pays well,” said Safwan, who had been working as a security guard for the past eight months and earning a monthly salary of RM1,500.
“This operation is a joint effort between National Registration Department (NRD), state Immigration Department, Civil Defence Department (JPAM) and the Home Ministry,” said department director of Investigation & Enforcement Wan Zakaria Wan Awang on Thursday.
“We have identified eighty illegal workers in the area and will continue to search for all of them.
“Those arrested today will investigated for carrying false documents and will be charged in the Magistrate’s Court here tomorrow,” said Wan Zakaria.
He added that the foreigners face up to three years in jail and/or RM2,000 fine if convicted for the offence.
“We will petition for strict actions to be taken against companies hiring illegal migrants once investigation wraps up,” said Wan Zakaria.
