Why I joined politics?

By Ken Yong

First, let me tell you why I joined politics.  When I look around and see a lot of poverty in Sabah, I just want to do something about it.  I need not say more about the level of poverty in Sabah.

The World Bank (WB) in Washington has confirmed that Sabah is not only the poorest state in Malaysia but it’s likely to stay that way for a considerable length of time given current efforts in poverty eradication.

I personally saw very distressing and hopeless conditions in too many families in Sandakan during the recent Batu Sapi by-election.  A good friend of mine told me that he happened to visit a family in that area back in the nineties and saw a kid of around three years old asking the mother for milk.  The mother was so poor she could not afford milk, she painted the milk bottle with a coat of white paint.  The mother put water into the bottle and her kid thought it was milk.  The mother told my friend that if her kid knew it was just water, the kid would refuse.  So she had to trick the kid into thinking that the bottle contained milk.  The kid went to bed still empty-stomach.

When a government can sleep soundly while its people suffer such appalling hardship, something is really wrong.  That’s my motivation.  I believe the present government has failed.  I want to do something for the poor people in Sabah.  I hope more young people feel the same sentiment and take up the cause.  It is not very difficult.  It can be good to the human spirit.

In solidarity,
Ken Yong.

  1. Really Sabah become poor in status or most real sabahan are really poor?

Still everywhere and in daily life heavy traffics flow and spring up of many eating outlets.Even selling at expensive price yet many can just pay and eat 'tak rasa'.

Why but many just shake head with no explanantion la...!!!

May be a hidden psychological problem with lavish behavior not easy to overcome.

  2. Spot on mate. I have reason too the reason i joined politics. My motivation comes when there's is a lot of PTI. I don't want to see my next generation call this people of PTI call "BOSS" when we are our BOSS in our own soil.

  4. 'A journey to a thousand miles starts with the first step,'so goes the phrase therefore I think whatever corrections we want to make to the injustice towards sabahans must be done by the present generation. Its not a question of 'why should we?' or 'we can't do it,' because our children's future are to be shaped by what our actions or inactions today. We can choose to sit back, relax and do nothing or be at the forefront of actions facing the bombs and bullets so that our children can have a better future. It is never too late.

I am touched by this story of the hungry child and what the mother did to pacify him.It is not a solution to her problem because the child will still be hungry but she tried.I hope God will bless her for trying.

The problems we face are the same.It doesn't mean we can solve the problems but for not trying we will definitely be cursed by our generations to come for the sufferings they face.To me there must be a legacy for them to remember and be proud of us.

  5. A sad story about our poor people in Sabah, deprived of the basic necessities as a local citizen. There is no aid from government for these poor people, neglected while they basked on ill gotten wealth through their politics of power and money.

  7. Let me be frank here, joining politics alone will not solve poverty problem. Its the things you do to solve this problem that matters.

  9. The present mindset is - many sabahan still think poverty just need to be those street strangers and PATI kids but not their kids.

And look at the way they live and passive but not sensible response towards daily life luxurity means can see what outsider said:"doing business even 'teh tarik' bisnes here is with big profit!"

When are these sabahan wake up from sleep to realise we are not fairly or equally treated in many things in life spending more instead we are also contributing like other?
