TI-M unfazed by 'polls bribe' criticism

Amidst brickbats, the Malaysian chapter of corruption watchdog Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) is maintaining its position that government handouts during election campaigns are blatant vote buying tactics.

"Of course it's a bribe. What else could it be? If you are outrightly giving a voter RM1,000 and say 'vote for me', what else could it be? There have to be clear do's and don'ts," TI-M president Paul Low said.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function in Kuala Lumpur today, Low also maintained that promises made during campaigns constitute a grey area.

GTP and the stink of reality

Jewan Kaur

Snatch thefts, robberies and murders are almost a daily threat and the result is people are afraid to leave their homes, terrified of the danger lurking outside.Crimes like rape are far from decreasing. Not a day goes by without newspapers reporting about it. This does not include the rapes perpetrated by those in authority.

For those in police custody, they should count their blessings if they do not end up dead in their cells. In the face of all this, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has declared his contentment with the performance of civil servants.

From Paul Kadang, via e-mail

SNAP’s recent re-emergence to reclaim its place in the Sarawak political arena has sparked numerous allegations and prejudgements on the motives of the prime movers of the party’s re-vitalisation.

Smut video, scumbag and Umno politics

What was a member of the Malaysian royal household, allegedly from Selangor, doing at a screening of the sex video at Shangri-la hotel?

The story surrounding the Carcosa smut video has been retold so many times by so many people. Before Carcosa there was Flamingo. Before Flamingo there was even a private viewing for five people at the Shangri-La hotel.

I think those five people at the Shangrila screenimg should be hauled up for questioning. At each of these viewings, the main protagonists were present – Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and Rahim Tamby Chik.

'Election handouts ARE bribes'

The Malaysian chapter of the corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI-M) has refuted the claim that election handouts are not bribes.

"This is especially during campaigning. Unfortunately there are no adequate laws to deal with those things, especially when it comes to cash and sewing machines," said TI-Malaysia president Paul Low.

"There are a lot of promises made, like building a bridge. These promises are borderline.

GTP: Why There Is No Reason For Govt To Blow Its Trumpet

Chua Jui Meng

The annual report of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) has just come out.

Predictably it is a feel good and highly manipulative document whose actual accomplishments are totally out of line with what is needed to improve the lives of Malaysians.

All the statistics regurgitated by a compliant BN mass media are meant to impress Malaysians but they actually bring scorn and disbelief.

Where is our moral high ground?

Prof Dr Mohamad Tajuddin M Rasdi

I am writing in response to the call by Dr Asri to Muslims to rise against the shamefull acts by certain individuals in the Anwar Ibrahim so called 'Sex Video' affair.

The fact is as clear as a bell; if certain parties have incriminating evidence against any individual, let him put up the so called evidence in a court of law so that it would give a chance for the counsels of the accused to examine and analyse the authenticity of the videotapes.

Sex video probe: 'Don't let AG use police

Inspector-general of police (IGP) Ismail Omar must ensure that the investigation of the sex video scandal is carried out free of political or other forms of pressure, said former Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim.

This is given the history of bad blood between two key figures - attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail (right) and former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik - and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar has denied he is the man in the video and lodged a police report.

Investigations are now underway under Section 292 of the Penal Code relating to the distribution of obscene material.

Where is Umno's morality in the sex video?

Daniel John Jambun

I thought it was really ironic recently when so many demonstrations were staged urging the government to investigate the sex video allegedly involving Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. One of these demonstrations include one organised by Sabah UMNO, with participation by Filipino immigrants. This made me think of some very pertinent questions about logic in the whole matter.

Looks like him but. . .

By RASHVINJEET S.BEDI and KAREN CHAPMAN

The emergence of a sex video allegedly featuring Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has had people asking if it is really him or a lookalike, or whether the video has been doctored.

IT engineer Lim Ming Leong has not watched the purported sex video of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim but he is convinced it is not the Opposition Leader. He insists that the man in the video is an impersonator.

“I just know,” the self-confessed pro-opposition supporter says matter-of-factly.

Radioactivity increases in sea-water off Japan nuclear plant

Radioactive iodine in sea-water off Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant rose to 1,850 times the usual level from 1,250 times measured yesterday, Japan’s nuclear safety agency said today.

Separately, senior agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama said leakage from reactor vessels was likely to have been the cause for high levels of radiation found in water that has accumulated in turbine buildings.

The radioactive water within the plant has hampered workers from restoring its cooling systems. — Reuters

All for Nought

By Wong Chun Wai, The Star

The public is divided between believers and sceptics over the sex video.

IT was a most unusual way of exposing a sex video to incriminate a political enemy. Such videos are often sent to media companies in envelopes or they just pop up on the Internet. It is also rare for anyone to claim responsibility for such gutter politics.

Does it feel like a bunch of gangsters are running this country?

By Naragan, via FMT

The most recent act by Umno to try and kill off Anwar with a lowly sex video moves me to write this article. Because it increasingly feels like we are living in a country run by gangsters. What characterises gangsters? Is there any difference between what gangsters do and what Umno is doing?

Use of force, fear, bribes, threats, violence, deceit, unchallengeable positions, indulgence, and parasitic existence and not worrying about appearances would be a reasonable answer to the first question.

To answer the second question “Is there any difference?” I will examine how Umno performs in many of these dimensions to answer that question.

In Sarawak, a Christian groundswell

By Sheridan Mahavera

The stamping of the bible by the Ministry of Home Affairs is only one out of the many reasons that have caused unhappiness among the Christians in Sarawak.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 — When 3,000 Christians turned up for a prayer rally in Kuching this week it sent ripples running through Petrajaya, where gleaming structures house the Sarawak state government that is facing elections next month.

In a Christian-majority state where there has been little in the way of religious tension, the prayer rally was an unusual event.

The se‘X’-Files of BN

BN’s emphasis is on sex – and the many versions of it. BN’s politicians tend to hide behind catchy slogans, and sexual scandals.

What is it like to be a teenager who wants to exercise his democratic rights in a BN dominated Malaysia?

He notes that BN ministers rarely discuss important topics like fiscal policy, education, health, the environment, energy and transportation.
